Super weak. Don't even click. I mean it. Sorry to pollute the friends page feeds. Ugh.

Hey dude, thought I might try to help ya out a bit. First off, mute everything except the line in that you are using and maybe the wav input. Secondly what kind of mic are ya using? Third, if you can get your hands on it sooner than I see you, get a copy of sony sound forge and record it into that and then play with it from there including level boosting and compressor/limiter levels. To avoid little distracting ambient noises in your speaking and breath, you may also want to get sony's Acid and do one track of inconsequential music in the background like we did in the podcast, with your voice over top. Lastly, if you have separate eq controls like bass, mid, and hi, you'll want the bass down below 5, the mid you should play with until you get the desired effect, and the hi above 5. I should have some time in about 2 weeks if you want me to come over with the aforementioned progs and I could learn ya some stuff. What kind of mic are you using?

Thanks for your help. I'll try those things if I can figure them out. I'm just using Windows Sound Recorder that hasn't changed in oh, sixteen years, and I'm pretty sure my sound card is run of the mill. Plus I can only record a minute at a time.

I know I have a Sony microphone. That's all I can remember. it's at home, though, so I'll have to get back to you on that. It looks middle to high quality to my untrained eye but as I may have already implied, I know nothing.

Are sound forge and Acid free? Is there any freeware?

Yeah, sure, come on over. Let's do this thing.

Yeah, make sure the CD input and line-ins are both muted. CD LOVES to make noises even when there's nothing going on. Lotsa hiss.

Acid and Sound Forge are not free.
We might know a guy who knows a guy, though.

Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/) *is* free, and is pretty simple to figure out (nice big round record button and stuff like that).

Reaper (http://www.reaper.fm) is not free, but looks like it's guiltware, and is a LOT like Acid.

It's a Sanyo microphone. 242, I believe.
