Homeless Valentine
14 February 2009 12:22Last night as I was walking through the disadvantaged part of town, the part of town where the problem of Vancouver is beating vibrantly over drug addictions and mental illness, the part of town where too many people have no place to live, where people know that the winters are less likely to kill you in Vancouver than they will in Winnipeg if you sleep outside more often than not, I got a Valentine.
The woman was African and I can't tell you what her age was. She was wearing found clothing and missing most of her teeth. She might have been mid-twenties. She might have been fifty. I have no idea. She was small. She gave me this valentine and wished me a happy valentine's day. I gave her all of the change I had on me, like nineteen dollars. This might be the best valentine I've ever received. It sums up my view of the holiday better than my words ever could.
Happy Valentine's Day
