Every time travel device had been destroyed except one.

It resided in the Main Temporal Hall in Washington. Every year at midnight on January 1st, the winner of that year’s Lottery was allowed to use it.

People sent proposals to the Lottery Commission mentioning what they’d do if they had a chance to go back in time. Kill Hitler, kill Genghis Khan, prevent the assassination of Lennon, rescue a dead loved one, make a million on a certain sports event and leave it to their family, put a small amount of money in a bank account in the 1700s and leave it for a desendent, etc, etc.

The Temporal Council sifted through them for a year and picked the twelve best ideas. Out of those twelve, a winner was drawn at random on national television.

The lucky winner got to step into the time machine and go back in time. The dials were set, the countdown started, and the switch was thrown. It was a one way trip.

They would possibly make the world a better place or change the course of history for the worse. The only problem is that we would never notice the difference.

It was all bullshit, of course. After the time wars, they recognized that Time Travel was way too dangerous to be allowed. Every single document pertaining to Time Travel was destroyed, all the capsules were killed, and the scientists themselves were gassed as criminals.

The Time Travel machine that they showed on television was merely a disintegration chamber.

It gave people hope but nothing else.
