Also, I've seen women play the waif and then scorn the men that try to help. Or even something as simple as a woman being deliberately sexual with no room for doubt and then laughing at a man when he responds to her. Something about that kind of behaviour rankles me really gets on my nerves. I don't see it that often but I've seen it.
So my idea was, what if a man was confronted with a symbol of innocence that needed immediate help and responded gallantly instinctually, without time to think. And then what would happen if that very girl that he saved chewed him out and made him feel like an utter fool for helping? I was going to go further and imagine that the whole event had been caught on some sort of American's Funniest Pranks or something like that and the announcer coming over and explaining to the man that it was just a joke that would soon air on television, the kid's an actor, here's a big cheque, sign this waiver, and no hard feelings. I was trying to imagine the roller coaster of emotions that would happen with those three things happening in rapid succession to a man who's life had become somewhat of an emotional flatline.
So I lost the hidden camera and the little girl doesn't really berate him in the way that I had intended but that was the germ.
Just in case you were interested. Maybe it ruins the story a little to get all the tiny little ingredients that made it happen. And maybe it's an overshare on other points as well. : )
