My hands are mute beneath these covers. Every twitch is a delicate arrangement. It’s a struggle to remain tied down. We are remaindered beings left over from a long division, the flow of blood on a blade, the suicide king, a tribute from a rebellious country. Our space ships might as well have been straw huts.
I turn my head to look at the two other little pigs. Our navigator and our medic. I was the pilot. All of us were engineers with an overlap in each other’s fields for the strongest possible team. Lisa, Charlie and myself. My name is Pilot Daniel.
Translucent muscles hold us in warm, wet beds that have no right to be so comforting.
I can see Lisa and Charlie’s eyes flicking over to me for instructions beneath their damp shell-hoods.
We are not being hurt. We’re being studied the same way we might have studied an insect back on our home planet. It’s integral for them to keep us alive to truly understand how we work.
It’s scary but we’re in no immediate danger and I’m not sure the Wolves know we’re awake. It would be a shame to ruin that element of surprise.
I close my front gill so that the other two can see it. Quiet, it means.
We lie here in a semi-lucid dream state, waiting for an opportunity to escape and wondering about our families on a planet that we were supposed to be defending.
