Day Two and Three
9 October 2009 01:37Day two was the Last Chance Slam. 1 minute poem (21 poets), then eight poets doing three minute poems and then four poets doing four minute poems. After all that, two winners get to join in on the IWPS competition proper. Survivor and a guy I think named Chris Johnson won. AMAZING poetry and audience.
I entered and so did Steve Miller, Sean Mcgarragle, Fernando, and Johnny Macrae. Steve was called to go up first which traditionally is the position of automatic death but out of all of us, he was the only one to go on to the second round. He got taken out there.
In between the one-minute rounds in the first half, (they broke them up into three rounds of seven) they had something called the Battle of the Bay where San Fran, San Jose, Oakland and someone else threw down with each other. It was a long night but the shows were fantastic.
Day three was a bunch of open mics and the first night of semi-finals. I did my iPoem number on the Comedy Stage. I entered the Nerd Slam and I won my head-to-head match against a guy that did an awesome piece based on the Monarch from Venture Brothers. I also won a bunch of stuff in the trivia contest. Woot!
After that, I was a time keeper for two rounds of the first night of semi-finals. The poetry here is top notch. The venue I was timekeeping in was tiny. It's an anarchist bookstore called the Long Haul. The stage was tiny, the place only held about fifty people, and a lot of the poets ended up going off of the mic. Again, magical and soul-destroying by turns.
Zaccheus Jackson placed respectably but it doesn't look promising for a shot at the finals stage. We'll see how it turns out after tomorrow.
All in all, having the time of my life. : )
