Cancer is a huge mountain-ghost as tall as a building. There are thousands of them haunting the planet.
They’re dressed in long, trailing shreds of ancient black silk nearly turned to gauze by age. The tendrils drift through all of us. They’re silent Godzilla snowmen made from volcanic ash striding over the earth.
Every city has a dozen of them now. They tower. Their faceless heads bob next to the blinking lights that warn planes about tall buildings.
They are clothed in the disease. They walk around slowly, dinosaur elephant footprints of pure stinking death that no one can see. The strands of silk trail down from their massive arms and whisper through the people on the crowded sidewalks.
They are the wind in the trees. They are the sound that replicating cells make when they’re busy making errors deep in the flesh. They are the carrier waves of conversations and the chemical memory of cheap nourishment.
They are the cobwebs that break across your face in the dark. They make you watch. They accelerate.
They hasten death with pheromones coalescing from the deep trenches of our progress.
We will be safe. We will be safe. We will be safe.
