skonen_bladesPayback is a bitch. I mean literally. Gods are created as a personal manifestation when enough people pray to the abstract concept of an ideal. In the beginning, there were gods of the hunt and fertility. Now there are gods of money and longevity.
And revenge. I suppose the concept of revenge has always been popular but lately, the United States has saturated the world’s entertainment with the notion that a person must revenge themselves for any slight, real or imagined. The cycle that results is as eternal as it is destabilizing. It prevents unity. This suits the system fine.
All those prayers for revenge were popularized in the slogan, “Payback is a bitch, ain’t it?” in such films as Independence Day. The popularity of this saying coupled with the sudden upsurge in the need for revenge both petty and immense created the need for a deity. The deity acted as a satellite dish for need and also like a tap created to control the rampant flow of results.
Want is a tangible thing. It needs to be controlled when enough people start wanting the same thing. We create gods in our own image. These gods help manage the flow of want. The smaller ones are created and die as passing fancies ripple through the centuries. Bigger ones hang about. Bronze had a good run, for instance.
Payback, naturally, is dressed in black leather. She has a scrape on her cheek and a split lip. She always has a feral smile and eyes that are practically slitted with glee. She’s always ready to spring. She has a wild crazy nest of hair that fluffs out like a goose that’s been hit by a car. Her leather suit is scuffed and scraped where it isn’t gleaming with spit. Her breathing is a constant breathy growl that could be mistaken for a purr was it not for the obvious restrained fury threading through it.
She has a belt with a tape-handled .38 holstered in it. She has a switchblade strapped to the thigh of her leg. She is too skinny. She’s athletic like if Iggy Pop was a gymnast. Her shadow is male and looks like a bodybuilder.
She’s up for all types of revenge. They say that all’s fair in love and war. She comes prepared. She’s ready for anything.
