I’m not sure what to write about today. On the way home from my piano lesson I saw a middle aged man get stabbed in the neck on Robson.

I had just given some money to a harmonica playing hobo that has been on Robson for as long as I’ve been in Vancouver. I saw a guy across the street stumble out from behind a bus and his shirt had a lot of blood on it. He was holding his neck. There was a sort of semi panic going on across the street. There were people on the bus looking out the window at the sidewalk away from me. People grabbed for their cel phones. About four people immediately ran across the street to help him. The cops were there less than a minute later. Four cop cars, then an ambulance, then a fire truck. Some kids there said they knew where the attacker was and ran off with the cops. One of the cop cars took off to intercept as well. I heard someone say that they were looking for a blonde asian teenager. Elias Koteas the actor was standing beside me near the end which added to the whole surreal feel of the scene.

The place was taped off and the officers starting talking to witnesses. A lot of people seemed to actually see the event itself so I didn’t stick around to give a deposition.

I felt guilty for not running to the man’s side like the other people did.

I tried to imagine what would provoke an asian teenager to stab an older fairly homeless looking man in the neck and couldn’t really convince myself that it was a drug debt or an altercation between people that knew each other. It seemed random.

One of the girls I was talking to said that she had seen the same thing happen up at Granville and Robson on Saturday night as well.

I have no idea if he lived or died. There didn't seem to be the amount of blood I'd expect from an artery but I'm no doctor.

I don’t know. Vancouver just didn’t seem very safe tonight.

EDIT: Looks like the work of this guy.

this is one of those times when you think you're reading fiction, then realise quite unpleasantly that you're not :/ nasty :/

Dude it was just awful. I'm still pretty shook up about it. If it's any consolation, the guy lived and it looks like they caught the guy.

Yeah no kidding. According to the article you posted he 'walked' away from the scene of the crime. Nuts. But it looks he's another older homeless person. When they were looking for a blonde asian teenager, I had nightmares of it being some sort of gang initiation or something.
Just awful. Bleah.
Bet you're liking the new part of town a little better now, eh?
