My heart’s always been a stolen car
And sanity’s a hitchhiker
Telling me to take it easy on the curves
That I can slow down
That I should do up my seat belt
This passenger is eager to leave
Sweating a little but trying to stay calm
Gripping the dashboard with one hand
The other hand on the door handle
But my heart has promised to drive him
To where he wants to go
And even though sanity is like,
“Hey, I could get out right here no problem”
My heart is like
“Oh believe me, it’s no problem”
Through a fearful sheen of sweat
And a smile chewing on nothing
A pedal-to-the-metal tension
of outrunning something
that stopped chasing a long time ago
Wild eyes that sometimes like
To turn off the headlights at night
When he’s alone
But this passenger gives this heart some decorum
A reason to at least pretend
To go from a 10 to a 9 while pretending it’s a 3
Sure, the hitchhiker’s temporary
But it’s good advice while it lasts
