RIP Bettie Page
12 December 2008 13:45Like a lot others, I'm very sad that Bettie Page died today and I feel compelled to write a little bit about it.
It's the passing of a legend. I find it fascinating that she basically modeled for a couple of years and then bailed to continue a very troubled life. But the impact she had is nothing short of incredible.
I remember hearing that she did a google search for herself in the mid-nineties to see if her past dabbling in modeling was still remembered in some small corner of this new thing called the internet and was astounded to get a crazy number of hits. I heard that she had no idea of how big her fame was.
I think about how many models must have been taking pictures with her around the same time and I wonder what made her in particular so famous over the years. Hugh Hefner said that there are a large number of uncontrollable factors that go into fame and that Bettie's fame was as huge as it was undefinable.
All you can really say is "Well, look at her!"
It's so much more than the sass or the curves. It's there in her face. She is the Veronica to Marilyn Monroe's Betty. She looked like she was having a great time.
I'm glad she was around and I'm sorry that she's gone. I look at those dates and I'm blown away, though. 1923 to 2008. The amount of change in between those two dates is insane. That's a good, long life. She'll be remembered as an icon long after her death.
Long live Bettie.
