This was my Oscar Wilde getup for Saturday. Good times. Thanks to Rose for help with the costuming and Watts Costume Rentals as well. I lost by one point to Robert Burns. I was astounded and how sad Wilde's poetry was, though, compared to the levity and biting wit of his plays and his quips. From what I hear that was in fashion at the time.

There is only one thing worse that being talked about, and that is not being talked about.

Have you read his children's story, The Happy Prince? It's impressively sad.

I haven't but I heard about it all day on Saturday. It's on my reading list now.

Diane Laloge, our co host on Wax Poetic, who was at the pub crawl, yesterday mentioned how eerily and uncannily you channeled the spirit of Oscar Wilde and how the resemblance was striking.

Wilde was a sad man in many respects. He never reclaimed his glory once he was released from prison. I would say his De Profundis is required reading.

I can lend it to you if you like.

Right on, that's good to know. I felt like I really got into him by the final stop there. I'd love to borrow De Profundis.

The likeness really is impressive, at least in that picture.

And yes, he was a bit sad:

A little bit more of a Hapsburg lip, and it'd be eerie.

Kate Beaton is lovely, isn't she? :-)

Kate Beaton is awesome. She draws the best facial expressions in all of comics.

I shall have to investigate this Kate Beaton further, I think. Oh, forgot about his lip. I could have jutted my chin out a little further for the effect, Brando style. : )

[livejournal.com profile] beatonna, or http://harkavagrant.com/ would be places to start. I'm sure you'll enjoy :-)

There is only one thing worse than looking properly poofy, and that is not looking properly poofy. Mmmyes. Clearly. Quite, quite. I say.

If you're in need of a suitably puffy shirt, waistcoat and/or whatnot, you might want to check out www.felixandkitty.com - they do custom work and would make you look outstanding.

Awesome. Thanks. I'd forgotten about that one. I have season one and two on DVD and it's surprising how many of their sketches were not actually that good. The good ones were fantastic, though, so that makes up for it.

Thanks for the felix and kitty link. I don't think I'd like to own a foppish costume outright but you never know. I might change my mind.

Never forget, son: REAL men wear lace!

I miss Buddy Cole. I always looked forward to his monologues in particular. I think I'll just have to go to YouTube and look up a few, just for nostalgia's sake.
